Operation Oil Life: Updates and Insights

At KrizTek, we’ve received numerous requests to clarify the testing parameters in Operation Oil Life, and we’re thrilled to deliver! To enhance transparency and usability, we’ve expanded our spreadsheet to include detailed descriptions of each metric. These updates not only strengthen the project but also create a resource for anyone interested in oil sampling—whether for personal or industrial applications.

If your business is looking to improve equipment reliability and implement predictive maintenance strategies, KrizTek is ready to help.

Adjustments to the Sampling Plan

Initially, we planned to sample at 75% oil life, but a long road trip shifted this to 70% oil life. Real-world variability adds authenticity to the data as we continue capturing key metrics like wear metals, contaminants, and additive health. These insights are essential for understanding oil and engine performance over time.

From Vehicles to Industry

Operation Oil Life highlights the connection between residential and industrial oil sampling. The same metrics we’re measuring—like iron for wear or TBN for acid neutralization—are just as critical in industrial applications such as compressors, turbines, and hydraulic systems. Both approaches rely on data-driven insights to optimize performance, reduce downtime, and prevent failures.

Enhanced Spreadsheet for Future Reference

Our updated spreadsheet now includes parameter descriptions that explain:

  • Iron (0-150 ppm): Indicates wear from steel components in engines or gearboxes.

  • Silicon (0-25 ppm): Reflects contamination from dirt or debris in air intakes or reservoirs.

  • TBN: Tracks the oil’s ability to neutralize acids, critical for both vehicle engines and industrial systems.

These descriptions align with industry standards, making the spreadsheet a valuable tool for oil analysis across all applications.

Stay Tuned

With the 70% sample complete, we’ll move on to 50%, 25%, and 0% oil life sampling to track trends, validate GM’s Oil Life algorithm, and uncover actionable insights. Whether you’re protecting a personal vehicle or industrial machinery, the principles are the same: data-driven reliability.

Let’s Partner: If your business is ready to strengthen reliability and maintenance strategies, KrizTek is here to help. Reach out to see how we can optimize your processes and protect your equipment.
